To The Girls

IMG_3458

Recently, I have found myself telling my fiancé that I’m just not very good at being a girl. What I mean by this is simply that I never do my hair, I throw on makeup once in a blue moon, I really don’t know what dressing cute means, I am loud, opinionated, and I often feel out of place. Now I recognize the underlying themes of sexism and sweeping generalizations in these thoughts. I’m guilty. Yet, I think there is something more to learn from my sentiments than just that.

By making the statement that I feel that I am “not very good at being a girl”, I am saying that there is a right way to be a girl. I am saying that I, and all other girls, should learn to stick themselves in a box and call it good. Except I can’t. If I am so focused on trying to be what is trendy, what is cute, and what is plain “girly”, then I will miss the beauty of not fitting the mold.

We as girls, as women, are not called to care what others think of our appearance or personality. We are not called to stay in between the lines of what a woman should be. We are called to grow and to change and to stretch and become better! It is not about being trendy or being the most popular girl in school or woman in the workplace. It is about finding our identity outside of those things. Our identity is found in God, and when we truly recognize that we know there is no one left to impress! As long as I am striving to know Christ better and to love his people more, he could care less how “girly” I seem to be. He has given us all our own unique identities, looks, and personalities and made us all to be WOMEN.

So in conclusion, I am checking my self-obsession at the door. Yes! That is really what it is. I am focused outward, not inward. God’s people do not fit the mold of this world, and they never will. We girls bear the womanly image in all our own ways. When we stop caring about it, that’s when we do our best work.
