What Little I Know

<An inadequate summary of things I’ve been learning through dating in college: about boys, myself, God, and the absolute gorgeous mess that is human emotion. >

Wisdom comes with age. This is not a secret well kept. Twenty years of life has a disparity of experiences to pull from when compared with a life of eighty years. Yet, there is something raw and beautiful about accepting the wisdom that you have and voraciously consuming more from all those that offer. This is all to say that I am, in a word, young.

What I lack wisdom, I do not lack in emotion. Crying has been my specialty these past three years. That sounds worrisome, frightening, a little bit concerning. For me, it has been freeing. I have been given freedom to simply let my emotions out in a physical way. Joy. Grief. Frustration. Anger. Many a tear has been cried; many at the hands of this thing called dating. My emotions run high.

We as humans are so intricately complex, in ways that only our Creator will ever fully understand. When you bring TWO of us humans together to try and love each other well, everything, including emotion, is exponentially multiplied.

I fight hard, as cliche as it sounds. My boy does too. We are opinionated and stubborn and brash. Often we cling too tightly to control instead of compromise. We are selfish with the big things and the little. Yet, we have learned to forgive even harder. We let go when it needs to go because we have an example of mercy and grace much bigger than ourselves.

Through God, I have learned the art of caring for another person more than myself. Through Christ, of sacrifice beyond anything my selfish being could fathom. If you place a relationship into His hands, He WILL guide it and put to death the inevitable sin that creeps in.

When we are distraught by the way our significant other treats us or by the way we have treated others, we have to remember the way we treated the living Son of God. It is enough to humble anyone immediately. Fortunately, we have the glorious freedom to CRY ABOUT IT. Marvel in the wonder that is the Cross and bring it into every relationship in life, dating or otherwise. Humans are messy. We will clash. In the end, it is all already resolved. It is satisfied. ” It is finished”.

Give yourself and others grace in relationships. Bring Christ into all of them. Feel it all and be grateful that you can.
